Background

Mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, phobias and trauma are experienced by many people at some point in their lives. Unfortunately these common mental health problems can have a really negative impact upon our lives and prevent us from progressing towards our life goals. Psychotherapy is an opportunity to learn what is keeping the problem going and how to adapt or overcome it. The therapy approaches offered are Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). Both of these approaches have a strong research base and therefore represent the best in evidence based health care which increases the chances of them being of benefit to you.

How it works

It is difficult to predict exactly how long a course of therapy will take. During the initial appointment we will identify the thoughts, feelings and behaviours that seem to be keeping you stuck and at times make matters worse. We will also discuss what you hope to achieve from therapy and agree goals relating to this that we both feel are realistic and achievable within a time scale that is either affordable to you or meets the criteria of your insurance company. An average course of therapy with me is twelve sessions, although this can be in excess of twenty or as few as six dependant upon your therapy goals. Each session will last for fifty minutes, with an expectation that you undertake additional work between sessions. Sessions can be face to face in a private therapy room within the Cardiff area or contact can be via phone or  video conference .

Face to Face

The charge to individuals who self refer is £90 per fifty minute session. If you wish, you can pay this in advance via the Payment page or I can send you a PayPal invoice. Alternatively, you can pay by cash or card on the day of your appointment. Fees and who pays them may vary if you are accessing my service via an insurance company, solicitor or agent and you should discuss the cost to you with them directly. I am recognised by the following insurance companies:  AVIVA, AXA/PPP, WPA, PruHealth, Allianz, CIGNA and BUPA. The location of my therapy rooms can be found on the Contact Me page.

Phone/ Video Conference

I appreciate that the logistics of having to attend a specific geographical location may be difficult for some people. Should geographical constraints be preventing you from accessing therapy then it may be possible to offer you CBT via phone or video conference . The charge for remotely delivered psychotherapy is £90,  I ask for payment in advance via PayPal on the Payment page . I woud be happy to discuss this option with you either over the phone or by email.

Other things that you should know

Although both CBT and EMDR are effective therapies, it is important to remember that they don't suit everybody or every problem. If at the initial appointment it becomes apparent that your difficulties are not suited to these two approaches then I will recommend this to you at that point. We will review the course of therapy approximately every four sessions. This is an opportunity for you to opt in to further sessions and to check that the therapy is helping.

Should you fail to attend an appointment I will charge you the full cost unless you have given me 48 hours notice.

Should you not wish to pay privately for psychotherapy I recommend that you visit your GP and discuss a referral to an NHS psychotherapy service.

If you have any further questions then please feel free to contact me and I will endeavour to answer them.
